Velvet Machine

Sonic texture generator / blur / non‑linear reverb

Velvet Machine Screenshot

Velvet Machine is an audio effect based on real-time convolution with enveloped velvet noise. It's designed to:

  • Stretch and blur out even short sounds to lengths of up to 10 seconds
  • Produce reverb-like textures with flexible volume envelope (including reverse, fading in and out, pulsating etc.)
  • Work as a variable density random multi-tap delay (bordering on granular-like sounds)

Note for iOS users: At high settings, Velvet Machine can be quite CPU-intensive. A minimum of 5th Gen iPad, iPhone 6s or 1st Gen iPhone SE is recommended.

Version History

1.2.1

  • The Windows version no longer requires AVX and works on older SSE-only CPUs

1.2.0

May 12, 2021
  • Now also available as an AU and VST3 plugin for Mac and Windows!
  • Time and Density controls will now turn red when the effect is silent, i.e. Time is set too low to fit even a single impulse at current Density (e.g. density of 1 ips and time less than 1 s, 2 ips and time less than 500 ms, etc.)
  • Minor changes to the UI reflecting that we are now Phonolyth

1.1.0

December 10, 2020
  • Tempo sync option for time and predelay
  • Minimum time is now 50 ms and maximum predelay is 1 s. Presets saved with v1.0.0 will work, but you may have to adjust parameter automation in your existing host projects
  • Tweaked automatic gain correction. You may have to adjust the levels in your existing presets or projects
  • Updated UI including improved layout for smaller window sizes
  • Lowered minimum required iOS version to 12. Velvet Machine’s CPU usage is the same, so please make sure to read the description for device requirements
  • Various minor tweaks
